As we are learning through research, there are positive benefits for children when they partake in a healthy diet and negative consequences when they do not. It has been established, that when children start their day with a nutritious breakfast that fulfills their nutritional needs, they are able to; problem solve at a quicker pace, make fewer mistakes, have stronger cognitive abilities, and vigorous memory skills.A breakfast, that is high in protein, such as; eggs, yogurt, or nut-butter, helps stabilize blood sugars which aids in the ability to better focus and concentrate. While complex carbohydrates aid in digestion, so the combination of both allows your child an optimal start to their day.
Foods high in sugar such as; cereal, white bread, jam, should be avoided or at least moderated, based on the fact that what these foods offer are a quick surge of energy which is then followed by lethargy. Another reason to avoid foods high in sugar, is they quickly make you feel full, and delete your ability to eat foods that offer more energy.
It has been assessed that consuming a nutritious diet, also enhances your child’s learning abilities by protecting the brain from damage that can and does occur when ingesting food high in calories and fat, which make it difficult for proper brain connections to take place.
Refined Sugar is a chemical substance, and is addicting just as any chemical substance can be. Children actually can become addicted to sugar, and this disables the body to function properly, and makes it difficult for it to naturally; fight off infections such as ear and sinus, create skin infections such as eczema, create issues for sensory integration, pain threshold, and inappropriate behaviors, as well as, mental fogginess. There is of course, the concern for, childhood obesity, and the health conditions that go along with that.
With the help from; Parents, Teachers, and Caregivers, children can avoid the negative consequences of an improper diet by consuming more fresh fruits and vegetables and minimizing foods high in sugar and saturated fats. Eating healthy not only enhances a child’s learning abilities, because better nourished children are better learners.
