Hi Boys and Girls.
What do you think travels along a canal? It’s canal boat!
Have you seen a canal boat before? They are long and narrow.
Here comes a GREEN canal boat. It is approaching the large TOP GATE of a LOCK.
A LOCK is like a LIFT for Canal Boats, it helps the boats go UP and DOWN to move along the canal.
A man sits on the top gate.
And with the help of another man, they SWING open both sides.
The boat putts into the lock.
PUTT PUTT PUTT!
The lady is being very careful, steering into the lock chamber.
The man closes the LEFT, and then the RIGHT side of the top gate.
He locks it tight.
The boat is now in the lock CHAMBER.
He begins to unlock the BOTTOM gate, opening the gate just a bit.
The water begins to RUSH out! It’s very loud isn’t it?
BACK in the lock chamber, the boat has gone down a long way.
Look how LOW it is now!
The man opens the BOTTOM gate.
And out comes the green Canal Boat onto the LOWER canal. “Ah Hoy there, lovely boating weather!”
Making sure they don’t forget to close the gate behind them,
the green canal boat motors away, and continues on it’s journey along the canal.
PUTT PUTT PUTT!
Wow – that was exciting!

What can float on water… but also fly? A seaplane can!
A seaplane has big floats on the bottom instead of wheels.
Therefore a seaplane can float just like a boat.
They use calm bodies of water, like a lake or river, as a runway.
Which means they can land in places were there are no runways. Like high up on a remote mountain lake.
Seaplanes also can dock at a harbour just like a boat.
Here is a seaplane motoring through the water. Is it about to take off?
Yes it is. The propeller speeds up. The water begins to splash and spray.
And take off! Up, Up and away it flies. High above the buildings and ships! The seaplane sores through the sky like a bird.
Out of the clouds comes the seaplane.
Would you like to see it land on the lake?
Looks like it is coming into land now.
And… splash! The seaplane touches down on the water.
Did you know that some airplane could take off and land on water?
Aren’t seaplanes clever!
